Handwriting of the First Macedonian Shakespeare Translation Discovered

At the National and University Library " Kliment Ohridski "- Skopje was presented the newly discovered manuscript translation of Shakespeare's" Merchant of Venice "by Macedonian intellectual, revolutionary and activist Todor Lazarov Hadzhidimitriev from 1908.

Director of the "Sv. Kliment Ohridski "- Skopje Ivan K. Zaroc noted that although the translation manuscript has long been library and catalog processed for its literary re- promotion deserved is our playwright Darko Spasov.

Translation of Lazarov is the third translation into Bulgarian language, the language of his education immediately after the translation of Nikola Rajtanov and Krstjo Mirski.

He stresses that it is the first translation of one of our country, the first Macedonian who translated Shakespeare then in literary Bulgarian and added that in his translation permeate original interpretations and interventions and a number of lexical interventions on which influenced his native Stip speech.- The question is who is his intimate creative impulse to translate Shakespeare into the cell of a prison in Tripoli where he was interned in 1905 along with Dr. Petar Kushev. Why Shakespeare and why "The Merchant of Venice" will remain an enigma, but I believe impetus for research modern of the Macedonian theater, playwrights and the wider Macedonian cultural and social public, - Zarov.


According to him, given that at the time they knew little English, as the basis of his translation of Shakespeare could serve a French or Turkish translation.

Spasov said that while working as a dramaturge at the Drama Theatre of the play "The Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare, directed by Natasha Poplavska, he scoured through the electronic system of "Sv. Kliment Ohridski " and located the rendition / manuscript of Todor Lazarov Hadzhidimitriev as antiques garden from the first category.
