First Neolithic settlements in Europe were located in Macedonia

The first Neolithic settlements in Europe were located in the area of geographical Macedonia, that is the conclusion of the authors Naumov from the Goce Delčev University in Štip and Agathe Reingruber from the Free University of Berlin in a new scientific work.

The earliest appearance of Neolithic settlements in Europe takes place in geographical Macedonia, as pointed out in the scientific work “Dating the Early Neolithic in Pelagonia: closing a chronological gap in Balkan prehistory” by authors Goce Naumov and Agathe Reingruber.

The research was recently published in the prestigious world journal of archaeology "Documenta Praehistorica" (link at the end of the article). It is based on long-term field research by the Center for Prehistoric Research (CIP) in Pelagonia, which culminated in chronological modeling of the resulting data at the Einstein Center in Berlin.

"This work sublimates the knowledge on the dating of the Neolithic mounds in Pelagonia, obtained through radiocarbon analyses of cereal seeds and animal bones. It indicates for the first time that the earliest appearance of Neolithic settlements in Europe is to be located in geographical Macedonia, including several sites in the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Greece, whose dating has been revised using chronological sequences, through the application of Bayesian modelling," explains CIP.

The article highlights the very important role of the Neolithic site of Vlaho, which unfortunately has faced the destruction of its eastern periphery and needs further protection. Vlaho is located almost on the border with Greece at Živojno, municipality of Novaci, near the city of Bitola.

The Vlaho site is characterized by one of the oldest Neolithic dates in Europe (about 6400 years BC), which makes it particularly unique in the world, both due to the dating and the unique presence of a dozen trenches throughout the settlement.

In addition to these arguments, several chronological diagrams have been created that confirm the time span of Vlaho in the second half of the seventh millennium BC, as well as that of other important Neolithic settlements in geographical Macedonia.
