New artifacts and archaeological sites discovered in Lake Ohrid

Last month the National Institution "Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and Museum - Ohrid" carried out an underwater archaeological reconnaissance project on parts of the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid to explore areas in the lake for which there were indications of archaeological sites.

At the same time, the project examined individual results, defined the boundaries of potential archaeological sites, as well as their positioning with the help of GPS devices, but also the discovery of new sites with the aim of being included in the national register of cultural heritage in Macedonia.

In addition to the educational parts near the villages of Peštani and Trpejca, special attention is paid to two places near the place "Ploča Micov Grad", which were discovered during freediving activities by members of the diving center "Amfora" from Ohrid.

Project manager, archaeologist and chief curator Bojan Taneski explains that in the first case, there are three fragmented ceramic vessels for storage, located at 45, 35 and 5 meters below the surface of the water.

In the second case, a find of building ceramics, i.e. roof tiles of the laconic type, which were discovered at a depth of 19.5 meters. Laconic type tiles were used for a long time in ancient times, but in this case they are dated to late antiquity, first discovered in the waters of Lake Ohrid.

In both cases, the distance of the objects at a distance of 70 to 100 meters from the shore of the lake indicates that they were transported by ship by water and, for unknown reasons, were unloaded or perhaps lost in these places.

The need for such a project arose from the interest of domestic and foreign guests in adventure tourism, that is, through diving activities to visit attractive places in the waters of Lake Ohrid, explains Taneski, adding:

The research gives a first picture of what is happening to these places and findings, and provides a starting point for thinking about their future, which will certainly include additional archaeological research.

According to the "Institute and Museum - Ohrid", the project has a protective character, as the explanation of the sites and individual knowledge of the cultural heritage protect them from illegal visits and activities.
